Central Shenandoah EMS Council presents annual regional EMS awards


Perlista Henry accepts the award for Outstanding EMS Provider from Gary Brown, Director of the Virginia Office of EMS.


Two regional emergency medical services agencies and seven individuals received awards from the Central Shenandoah EMS Council (CSEMSC) at an awards ceremony held October 27 at the CSEMSC office in Staunton.

"The award winners are all outstanding and represent the best in our regional EMS system," said CSEMSC Executive Director David E. Cullen, Jr. "These award winners are being submitted to the State EMS Advisory Board to compete at the state level in the Governor's EMS Awards. The winners of those awards will be announced on November 13 in Norfolk at the 25th EMS Symposium."

The CSEMS Council regional award winners include:

  • Outstanding EMS Provider - Perlista Henry of the Hot Springs Rescue Squad.
  • Outstanding EMS Physician - Asher Brand, M.D. from the Augusta Medical Center.
  • Outstanding EMS Instructor - Matt Lawler of the Staunton-Augusta Rescue Squad and the Training Director of the Central Shenandoah EMS Council.
  • Outstanding Contribution to EMS by a Nurse - Leslie Ney, R.N. from Rockingham Memorial Hospital.
  • Outstanding EMS Agency - The Waynesboro First Aid Crew
  • Outstanding EMS Call of the Year - Churchville Volunteer Fire Department and Rescue Squad
  • Outstanding Contribution to EMS - Joan Watson, Business Manager for the Central Shenandoah EMS Council
  • Outstanding Contribution to EMS for Children - Kim Simmons, American Heart Association Community Training Center Coordinator for the Central Shenandoah EMS Council
  • Kevin Sperka Memorial Award for the Outstanding Junior Rescue Squad Member - Jonathan Knight, President of the Stuarts Draft Junior Rescue Squad

Each winner received a distinctive award from CSEMS Board President Gary Critzer signifying their contribution to the Central Shenandoah EMS region. Mr. Critzer commended each winner while explaining the criteria for each award to the audience. He also announced that the 2005 award ceremony will be held next July and that nominations are now being accepted.

The Central Shenandoah EMS Council serves the counties of Augusta, Bath, Highland, Rockbridge, Rockingham, and the cities of Buena Vista, Harrisonburg, Lexington, Staunton and Waynesboro. The regional EMS council is an integral part of Virginia's comprehensive EMS system. It serves to assess, identify, coordinate, plan and implement an efficient and effective regional EMS delivery system in partnership with the Virginia Office of Emergency Medical Services and the Governor's EMS Advisory Board.
