The Central
Shenandoah EMS Council Local Protocol Program provides
instruction to EMS providers in the region on specific local
protocols that differ from the 1994 release of the Emergency
Medical Technician-Basic: National Standard Curriculum and
the 1995 release of the First Responder: National Standard
Curriculum. Modules of the curriculum include use of
automatic external defibrillators (AED), King LT airway,
EpiPen® Auto-Injector, glucose monitoring, use of
oral glucose and use of glucagon, and administration of
aspirin and nitroglycerin for cardiac emergencies. The goal
of the program is to have adequately trained BLS providers
who can provide advanced interventions for critical
patients. |
|
Students
attending a Local Protocol program shall be certified as EMT-Basic
or higher for all modules except the Early Defibrillation (AED)
module. In addition to EMT-Basic providers, First Responder
providers are required to attend the Early Defibrillation (AED)
module. First Responders may optionally attend the glucose
screening section of the Glucose Screening, Oral Glucose &
Glucagon Administration module. Advanced life support
providers are not required to attend local protocol
programs. |
|
Regional EMT-Basic
providers are required to complete all of the modules of the
local protocol training program before being released to
practice as an attendant-in-charge. |
|
Annual
provider review is required. A provider may attend a
standard local protocol course or may attend a renewal
course. Recertifying providers are only required to
participate in the identified practical aspect of the
program, including the practical evaluation. |
|
Local
Training is the responsibility of each EMS agency in the
CSEMS Council region and should be provided by the local
instructor. |
