Continuing Education

General CE Guidelines

Don't wait until the last minute to get your CE hours.  Your CE credits must arrive in Richmond before you expire.  For example, if you expire on the 31st of the month and attend a CE class to get the last hours you need on the 29th of the month, the CE card will not arrive in Richmond before 4:30 pm on the 31st, unless you overnight the CE card.  If your card arrives at OEMS late, you will be in reentry.

Check your CE report on-line by clicking here.  The only time OEMS sends a report to you is when you are eligible to recertify.  Keep track of your CE hours.  If you took a class that did not credit, contact the instructor that taught the course to have the situation rectified.  Do not wait until the last minute to fix CE that did not credit two years ago.

Fill in your CE cards correctly.  Occasionally, instructors receive returned cards due to incorrect provider certification numbers and other problems.

The continuing education system can be a confusing.  Please feel free to call the Council for assistance.  Again, please contact us promptly when you have an issue with CE so that we have time to remedy the problem.  Many providers will call the day before they expire, leaving little to no time to figure out the problem and fix it.

Web Based CE in Virginia

The Office is EMS is pleased to announce the capability to receive electronic continuing education records from third-party CE vendors. This new interface allows the Office of EMS to accept and apply Category 1 and Category 2 CE credits earned from approved third-party vendors directly to the provider’s CE records.  For EMS certification levels that require recertification at the state level (First Responder, EMT-Basic, EMT-Enhanced) the number of CE credits that can be earned online and counted toward recertification is unlimited.  However, provider’s seeking to recertify their National Registry certification (EMT-Intermediate 99 and EMT-Paramedic) are limited to 10 hours of online/distributive education credits. This is a policy of the National Registry of EMT’s.
